The Strongest Proof   [Robot Eats A Steak] CD EP

This band never seems to stop amazing me. It seems that these guys have one goal...to make the best damn music as possible...and that's it! One of the most noticeable traits of TSP is how much energy comes out through the music and how it's all put together in a way that speaks (We know what we are doing) without letting things become overdone or underdone in the final mix. One could say that this CD is a extension of (QUICKSAND'S) first album (SLIP) or maybe heavily influenced by that album or era if you are looking to deep into things, but TSP make you remember what good ROCK N' ROLL is all about with the abilities of just making the music that they want to make and letting it speak for itself.

TSP have recently lost a member but continue to move forward and deal with punches along the way and this CD is living proof that things are not slowing down. Matt Tomlinson's vocals are powerful with neverending conviction of the craft while the guitars (Tomlinson & Roth) take you from the simplest to the complex and making the bass and drums drive it all home for a perfect ending everytime. 7 new tracks from a amazing band that keep it real and alive and should not be passed up. The only thing this CD is missing is a lyric sheet.

The Wolverton Brothers – Old, Ugly, and Loud, CD

Let's brush our teeth cause we'll have a brighter smile” sings the Wolverton's apathetic voice of doom, Tim Schwallie on the track, A Better Place. And yes, a better place it is. Years ago, my initiation to The Wolverton Brothers came when I spotted an odd looking album on the wall of the local record store. It was a little countryesque looking and sounded kinda likewise. A type of alt country from way before Americana had became a genre and had a sound like they had bought all of the original Pere Ubu and The Fall singles on their original release dates. But this time, they've gone all German on us. That's German as in Krautrock. Think about the best parts of Faust, Can, or even Second Edition era Public Image Limited. The tracks all have loud guitars, driving bass lines, and seem to rely on repetition to drive home the musical themes. And over top of all this are a wide bevy of eclectic instruments and noises. Mr. Armageddon, A Better Place, and Cheese are among the best tracks that these guys have ever laid down. Even the lengthy instrumentals cause your ears sit up and smile in pure enjoyment. And I'm happy to see that the Wolvertons have now taken the studio recording responsibilities upon themselves. This is definitely their best sounding and most rocking release of their decades long career. The guys are true motherfucking artists! On the new great new Ionik Recordings label. Check Ionik's other shit out too! Andy Breighton  12/06/2008

The Areola Treat  CD EP

Just south of Italy you can find the small country (MALTA) and the home of THE AREOLA TREAT. I know...I never heard of it either till now, but that's besides the point. THE AREOLA TREAT put together a mix of new and old school ART PUNK-ROCK that blends perfectly into the modern mix of things, but keeping it at a style they can call their own without becoming trendy. Beautiful blistering female vocals that tend to lean somewhere between ( Karen O & Juliette Lewis) but always keeping it sexy throughout. Forward/Impressive/Contemporary Guitars and Bass that have the perfect addition to the powerful drumming that goes with every track that makes this CD undeniably unique to the cause of the PUNK REVOLUTION and keeps things moving forward at all costs without loosing where the roots first started. 7 fantastic tracks and 24 minutes later i was floored by what this band has created and grateful for the fact that great music can come from anywhere... at anytime. The future just got a little brighter.  Dave Fishwick 11/07/2008

Black Owls - Lightning made us who we are...   CD

Insert disc, grab a MILLER HIGH LIFE and press play. THE BLACK OWLS are now going to take you on a journey through the history of Rock n' Roll and what has become what I call it ( The Heartlands influence on modern Rock) and how it has shaped the way of music and how it's still enjoyed today. Going through this disc brought back some fine memories of when MTV was a new channel on the idiot box and how I sat and waited for the next video to begin just to see what band it was and if I had ever heard of them. Remember that MTV actually was cool at some points of our lives if you grew up in the 80's till MP3 downloads killed the video star and evolution took over with the INTERNET and made everything much better. You don't have to be on TV or the Radio anymore to get your music out there, nor do you need the overpowering record labels telling you what you should listen to. AMEN! So with that being said I'm jumping in with both feet for this one and telling it how it is because without my little rant on 80's music trivia you will not get this at all. Ohio natives THE BLACK OWLS have put together some of the best well crafted songs influenced by some of this country and others best known musicians that still make their mark today. This disc is loaded with hints of (The Rolling Stones, The WHO, The Ramones and Georgia Satellites) to say the least with a vibe of your favorite local BAR band playing their hearts out till all hours of the night. Plenty of danceable tracks, a few absolute anthems and creative music abilities that make this band stand apart from the past and make the future seem more pleasant while staying true to this worlds music roots and making it fun again. Sometimes you have to go back a step and appreciate what was...before ever understanding what will be. History has made it's mark and it is time for the present to do the same and THE BLACK OWLS have a firm foothold in creating a new history for Rock n' Roll. This CD is a complete celebration of music at it's finest and should not be ignored. Dave Fishwick  11/07/2008

My Latex Brain
'Displasia Royale' Video Onslaught  DVD

Technology has taken over from this moment forth. What does that mean? Well it seems that bands are finally starting to put their heads together to offer more than just CD's and take it a step further and put their home computers to work for the sake of creating something more. Music is great...but video's to go with them are  fucking awesome. MLB creates the perfect atmosphere to coincide with what they have to offer with their music and visual effects and brings it straight to your living room for family enjoyment. This DVD is everything from their live CD 'Displasia Royale' brought back to life for a second helping. Listen in your car...watch at home has become a part of our present reality that makes the future seem more exciting to see what will happen next.  DVD's are not exactly a new concept in this world, but are still nice to have. This is only availlable at live shows for the moment...so get out and see these guys the next time they come to town.   Dave Fishwick 10/09/2008

THISTLE CD Release show at Southgate House 8/16/08

Well another year has gone by so fast with so many things to talk about.  This past year has brought out some of the best work from our local bands in Cincinnati, and it just never seems to stop. I have been reflecting on what has been done...and what hasn't... what I would like to see, but it will all fall into place in given time. It just so happens that this particular day of this event was also my birthday so I had high hopes of just letting loose with some friends and putting things into perspective as to where I'm at right now in this stage of life. I have been thinking about all the great friends that were gained...and lost, and the amazing places that I got to travel to, and the promises I have made to myself to get out there more and discover what's next around the bend.  Life moves pretty fast sometimes and you just can't capture it all, or write it all down... and thats why we have digital cameras to get the Pics and look at them later. Moving forward The Neus Subjex has taken another stab at getting our coverage out into the open and have been working very hard to make sure that we get it all...(That matters anyway) so this wont be that last that you see of us.

Thistle bringing out the heavy artillery.

The night starts off with a quick stop at Newport on the Levee to get a bite to eat and a MILLER CHILL  because that damn (pizza by the slice) place has closed it's doors. FUCKERS. Then moving on to witness at (The World of Crabs) brightly painted shells with cartoon logo's and one that had (U.S.A.) FUCK YEAH on it. What a strange concept to get people to pay for this stoopid, lack of imagination piece of shit that will probably die quicker than a gold fish that you win at a state fair. Now if it had a (MISFITS) logo...I would have been sold. Finaly moving over to SOUTHGATE not knowing really what band was playing when... the night started off fast with the first band (Lost Hands Found Fingers) that put on a great show for my first time seeing them live. I didn't expect to see anything that HEAVY but were good none the least. Dual guitar solo's, thumping Bass and two members that really needed a shave.

Lost Hands Found Fingers
Onto the Parlour where (Disguised as Birds) play their take on modern style ROCK mayhem that had me thinking that this was the offspring of (JESUS LIZARD) and (KYUSS). Now that's really saying something because these guys were ON IT! and so was the crowd... sucking it all up and were left wanting more, but there was a damn timeline that had to be followed so I hope that they come back soon.

(CATERPILLAR TRACKS) hit the stage next in the ballroom and I have never been dissappointed by a live show from these guy's. They always seem to set the stage right whether headlining or not, they do it...and do it well. An 8 song performance seemed a bit short, but that damn timeline just kept getting in the way, so I just dealt with it and decided that if this was the way that things were going to be, then just suck it up and get back in line for another beer.

My perception is starting to fade at this point because there are no NON SMOKING laws in Kentucky and the air was getting thick back up in the Parlour where the next band (BANDERAS) put on a show that reminded me of the old days at SUDSY MALONES when BRAINIAC would play, and the bleechers were still there.
People were hanging off the walls, standing on chairs and the band had their own cheerleader with a Cow Bell, and the crowd seemed to like gritty rockers that smoke too much and look like they just stepped out of the movie (Rebel Without A Cause) ...but I didn't see any motorcycles or James Dean so it wasn't all that bad.  And these are good at what they do, so you should see them at least once.

Disguised As Birds in flight
short NSX video break..... with Caterpillar Tracks and Thistle

Banderas
OK Ballroom once again, where (MIRANDA SOUND) took the stage and delivered their last performance ever. I had been hearing great things about this band all week, but I just didn't get all the hype. They were good, but not all that great. Maybe my taste in ROCK music tends to lean in a different direction, or maybe my ears were just getting tired and I needed a break and some fresh air to smoke my cigs. Sometimes things like this happen and I just walk away.

A much needed break was the right way to go out on the front lawn. Talking with the bands and capturing some hilarious video  put things back into order and I was ready to venture on with the main event.

Caterpillar Tracks in defiance of smoke
(THISTLE)
Now this band has been around for a long time but the shows are still just as fresh as they could be. They played every song off their new CD (THE SMALL HOURS) I think, and a few others that fit the set well. High energy was present throughout without dropping a beat and just getting what needed to be done...done. Not a lot of talking between songs is what I like in a band's performance and they let the music take control. This night was definitely filled to the rim with great bands and a great atmosphere except all the cig smoke, but hey thats what happens. I didn't get to see all the bands that I wanted to, but did get a earful of what our city has to offer. I would much rather attend something like this than something like (MID POINT) that has mostly locals playing anyway. Sometimes I feel like our city is trying to prove something other than just being conservative and trying to toot it's own horn about what we have to offer in the music community. We already know it... and you should have been there.   Dave Fishwick 09/10/2008

Miranda Sound

Far Out Art Out with Yer Brain Hanging Out.

Ulterior motives. That was what this night was about. Ulterior motives. First a reunion, and at first, I was hoping a maybe even a video... But that wasn't to be. Hey everybody, remember THE SYPHILITICS? Yeah, there are some of us out there that will never forget. On Saturday, August 9th an opportunity arose that would allow my presence to be graced by 2/3rds of the original Syphilitics in one place, at the same time. Just in case you were wondering, drummers don't count; not in this equation.... Way back when The Syphilitics were one of those bands that not only sang the songs of nervous desperation, but lived the life too. Never really occupying any solid ground to stand on and taking a page out of Spinal Taps book, they floated from one drummer to the next, even pulling unsuspecting people out of the crowd (ability be dammed) to “fill in” for a position that hadn't really any permanence. It was odd, but it worked. Liam Dolan sang. Tommy Ache played bass and Mark Zero ate away slowly at any nerves you had left. This was the original three. Yeah, there was others... Zach Thomas and Joe Six-Pack who had a strong claim to begin straightedge at the time... But These original three were it. Never really releasing more than a few demo tapes and a song on Centsless Productions now infamous “Blast From The Basement Volume One” (of which no second volume was made; what the fuck?). Everyone was left, and this ‘everyone’ includes me, with a bunch of flyers and stories of fights. Loud shows. Violence. Vomit and broken beer bottles. LOTS of beer bottles...

Tommy and Liam fight the night.

The Syphilitics usual night..out on the tracks.
So a chance arose to hang out with Liam and Tommy. Even thought I was really wanting to watch UFC and drink Pepsi, I bolted on that idea. I needed a space where I could talk. Where I could flex out a bit... It had been upwards of eight years since I seen Tommy. With Liam and Tommy together I proposed we go to visit THE NORTHSIDE TAVERN. A place I hadn't been to since their remodeling job and also a place I run into Mark Zero from time to time. I was thinking, but not planning, to run into Mark Zero and  set up a photo-opportunity with the original three. Yeah, I know where Mark “lives”, and there are even rumors of him carrying a cell phone (perhaps) but that seemed too easy. I was just wanting to run into him... And let magic happen.

So we... Meaning Liam and Tommy and I sat at an outside table at The Northside Tavern waiting to run into someone that could have been anywhere. Drinking. Talking. Remembering. Laughing. Catching up on the throw-up. Good OLD times are good. They are great. But even better are good NEW times. Even though I enjoyed the new remodel job at The Northside Tavern and deem it acceptable and like how it doesn't take you 15 minutes to buy a beer now. or how you don't have to somewhat FIGHT for your position to get that beer... and it's nice. Also, like Liam said, its even code friendly with a ‘kid’ urinal that helps you get piss splatter on yer legs if you are wearing shorts. I like how I don't think anyone will ever tap on my shoulder and ask me to move when Im watching The Sundresses NEXT time (because this makes me look like a DICK when I'm like, “Yeah, whatever scenester fuck”). I like how the bands aren't turning down anymore. I like how many tables there are. I like the two bars.... I don't like how there are still fucking pool tables, but hey that's nothing really...

Download some The Syphilitics tracks:

The Syphilitics - Hippie Generation mp3

But seriously, I REALLY wanted to watch GOOSE and TIGERLILLIES and REALLY wanted to watch DUPPY A JAMBA... But it just wasn't meant to be. Next time. Seriously. I promise. I really do... But as a special message from me to each of those bands: you dont need anyone's opinion, especially MINE to know that what you are doing is EXACTLY what you want to be doing. I could blame the NICE FLOOR inside the newer half of The Northisde Tavern for me missing EVERYTHING, because there are people out there who turn right around and walk out of places with nice wooden floors, but I'm not one of them. In fact, I DEFENDED that wooden floor and stated that If some fuck was the kind of person who would drive out to California in their car and sleep in that car and live in that car and wear Operation ivy shirts day in and day out... And THEN judge a place because of their choice in flooring... Then they could just piss off. So. I'm NOT blaming nice floor. I'm blaming Liam. I'm also blaming Tommy. While I'm at it, I'm also goin' to blame the weather because that’s a SAFE and AMERICAN thing to do!

We drank, like I said. We Talked. We remembered, We laughed... All like I said we did. Then we left so Liam could get some pants on and grab a bag full of Pabst from his broken refrigerator... Then we went to MURMUR, a spot I been really wanting to check out for some time now but had trouble finally getting out and about with a brain hanging out... With help from Tommy Aches superb Firefighter eyesight; yeah, this guy who played bass in the Syphilitics is now a firefighter in Indianapolis with a wife from Australia that everyone in indianapolis apologizes to for the death of Steve Irwin once they find out she's Australian and not UK-ish. Tommy and his wife have three kids who all have not only their birth names, but weird Australian names that sound like they could be future members of The Cosmic Psychos... And while were there, lets just say that Liam is still around in the Cincinnati scene. he is ‘recovering’ in ways that you wouldn't imagine and has no redeeming qualities that normal people would consider redeemable, except degenerate fucks like myself. He drinks. He prowls (as all panthers do). He climbs when he drinks too much (once again, as all Panthers do). And like you read earlier, he is wearing shorts now from time to time (not as panthers do). To finish this WAY BACK WHEN section, to get onto more important things, like Michas SLEEP ORGY... Mark Zero, the illustrious Mark Zero is also still around in Cincinnati and doing projects with Lil’ Billy Catfish. Mark Zero  has been known to get punched out by females for telling them they were not punk enough to go to a punk-rock fest, uses words like “perhaps” more commonly than is socially acceptable, and even took to calling people “mate” ala Crocodile Dundee (which is unrelated to Tommy Aches Australian love). There are even stories floating about Mark's cat showing up independently at The Gypsy Hut to hang out with some crusty punks and when Mark tried to carry the cat back home, jumped out of his arms and returned to the punx (notice I spell it with an ‘X’ that time). True story that I NEVER get tired of telling.

Liam and Tommy Syphilitic from
the infamous Club 55 gig with The Slobs
and The Socials 5/30/1998

But let's get back to the night.

Murmur. Cool fucking place. As far as I could tell. I was feeling good by time I got there, even though I hadn't drank a drop, Liam and Tommy kept a steady stream of Soda to me as they drank beer. I ran into Issac of Murmur in the back lot who told me what Micah Freeman had going on.... and it sounded interesting. But I missed the accompanying poem, so what I was to see was the END result... So I traversed the steps. Those steep fucker's made me proud I was sober. I felt the twinge of a feeling for Liam and Tommy though. And as Issac had best described, the lights were off, Micah was playing some trancelike acoustic guitar while laying down and the crowd were laying down too. On their backs. With pillows under their heads. I went back out to the hallway where Tommy and Liam were. Liam's hard sole shoes were off so as not to disturb Micah's piece. Tommy was hammering PBR’s (AKA ‘Winners”) and I asked for one. I gave in! The whole night I drank not ONE drop of alcohol. So naturally, I blame ART by way of Micah. This is AMERICA and it feels good to place blame! I took the beer and opened it under the disguise of a cough thinking that I didnt want to attract any thirsty sleepers when they heard a beer can open... And reentered to room to sit in a seat while Micah played. After Liam got tired of sending me pix messages of him  “Hanging Brain’ which is the motion of opening up ones fly just enough to expose a protruding ball sack that in turn looks like a brain (hence the term), he and Tommy joined me for Micah's... I don't know what he was calling it, but I refer to it as a ‘Sleep Orgy’ which I ended up really thinking was cool. Micah's playing was soft, and trancelike but with Murmur being on Beekman Street, which is a street traversed by many large trucks and within ear shot of the train yards, there was a bunch of backing noises that accompanied Michas piece that ended up sounding very “natural” as in NATURE. Every once and again, someone would get up from their slumber to go to the bathroom or whatever and return to lay down and resume their sleep... Micah really set Liam Tommy and I into an artistic sense of thinking.

But we didn't fall asleep. I finished my winner and we exited. Behind Murmur is a set of old grown-up weedy railroad tracks. Next to those are an access road and after another larger patch of weeds, the Mill Creek flows and beyond that those train yards. Those AWESOME train yards! Those train yards NEVER quit their screeching and banging and whistling. We three walked up and down the access road talking about rediscovering things that were already discovered and forgotten or ignored, like the access road. Or even the Mill Creek itself. I shared my hopes and aspirations of one day leading a expedition from the Mill Creek's beginnings in Butler county with canoes and kayaks, through Hamilton county and the various city scapes it pierces all the way to the Ohio river. I would document the entire creek using various media methods. Pictures. Journals. Video's. My expedition and I would redraw a map of the creek and document our findings and run-ins with natives and wildlife... I only had one beer up until now, so Im not blaming alcohol. Im blaming Micah and his art... Tommy and Liam could blame the art, but also the alcohol... They were lucky.

Dialogue from “Listen to That Progress”
“I want to climb that high tension line tower” Said Liam.

Out of Liam's earshot, Tommy said to me ‘What he doesn't know is that there isn't any ladders to climb the tower.”

I turned to Tommy and said “I know” but let's walk down there and rediscover that there isn't a way for Liam to climb the fucking thing.

He took a long pull of the winner and agreed.
--------------

So I cant really say this was a REUNION of The Syphilitics, just a JOINING. But even better than getting together with close friends and allies sharing the PAST is getting back in touch with those close friends and allies and creating a new future. New stories to pass down. New times to share before even newer times are created. Yeah, those were times, but THESE are times too!

The Killer of Buffalo is High and Low with Grief

The first thing that I noticed was that the 10+ port-o-lets lining 5th street were missing. Next up, the Corona was missing from the beer selections. I really hope that the city's interest in bringing local music downtown hasn't started wane, because the NSX really loves the smell of Anheuser-Busch products cooking in our hands on a messed up Midwest summer night in downtown Cincinnati. Damn the pro sports!! Local music performed by local creeps is where it's at! First up were The High and Low, and they shone through the late day sunlight like an Owsley number 5 with their Velvets meets the My Bloody Valentine meets the Syd Barrett sparseness. They had the oddball downtown crowd all up in a tizzy while butcher baby covering a Beatles tune. Note to Mike: Next time just crank up your amp and let the soundguy deal with it. Make him come to you. The Griefs were next, and I may or may not have have slung my inebriated body between them in the back wall of a club since I saw them possibly debut at Sudsy's years ago. At that time, they were pushing the garage rock hard up against the belt drive, automatic double remote control, two car garage door. My friend Chip the Slugger III (local g-rock aficionado) thought that The Griefs were just the giggly 60's reinvogorasted. Now I find The Griefs channeling the early eighties west coast indie rock and had me recollecting my thoughts on the seminal Green On Red albums. Weird...because the other local garage bands (Thee Shams and portions of The Greenhornes) are now growing their hair and moving musically into the early seventies. So The Griefs' left turn was a delightful separatist maneuver. The Buffalo Killers were tight having just come home from a long u turn through the states. It was the first time since listening to Hendrix bootlegs that I'd heard a band open with a warm up jam. The B-Killers let their hair fly and mashed their collective wah-wah pedals into the summertime blues night sky. The crowd was left crashed back into their plastic city supplied seatware mesmerized and stupidified. Kids danced, people shook hands, some grade school kid bought a B-Killers hat, and Mark said everything was alright. Let's hear it for the big amps! Hey Zach what's the "FFF" mean...French Foreigners Forever or Freedom Feigns Fortitude? Let us know. Andy Breighton 09/13/2008 photos p39

Is that A Tear in My Beer?
The Cincinnati Suds find reasons to cry.
In an attempt to further boost moral and togetherness, it was disclosed that members of THE CINCINNATI SUDS have been meeting (on an undisclosed day) at Junkers Tavern in Northside (opens at 7AM for your health, closes at 1 AM for the family, also, home of the "Nicotine-Stained Chandelier") where they load up the juke box of sad country music ballads, drink cheep beer and CRY! Yes, you heard right, CRY. As in SADNESS. As in TEARS!  The Suds WEEP! Andy Jody (bass) said "Sometimes its difficult because all it takes is a certain look and we all bust out in laughter." As for which day the band has deemed 'Cryday' well, that's a secret. In FULL support of Junkers and in our attempts to boost camaraderie and Junkers cash flow, THE NEUS SUBJEX will NOT disclose which day is in fact CRYDAY. Instead, get in your electric hybrids, or whatever a car is called these days, and go to Junkers yourself everyday UNTIL you find four creeps sitting at a bar drinking cheep booze, listening to country music and CRYING.

As a side note, It is also reported that Adam Wesley now considers himself a father-type figure and is getting laid a lot. Both new facets to Adams' personality are seemingly unrelated.

The Suds hunt for beers with a dollar trap.

The Number 7 is Purple and Gone Long
On a hellish hot night in August, reconstituted Long Gones and the new Purple # 7 hit the big new backroom at the Northside Tavern.  The room is apparently an exact replica of the castle where the great John Bonham laid down the drum tracks for When The Levee Breaks.  The new room is awesome mainly because it makes it possible to easily get a beer and see the band at the same time.  I just wish they'd added a trough to the bathrooms.  Are those illegal now?  The Long Gones thundered through a bunch of new garage rockers so it's looking like their reunion is moving beyond the reunion stage.  But it's still too early to tell if the marriage is going to be long term.  It was a real treat when birthday boy, Chef Jackson formerly of Dixie Trash, joined the Long Gones for a rousing rendition of Get Up and Shake It.   I didn't get a chance to ask Seth about the name change, but it looks like the Pernicious Knifs have changed line ups just too many times.  So Seth is fronting a new band called Purple # 7 with former PKer Krista on drums and, shockingly, the first NSX templar Mark Zero on bass.  This, I believe, was only their second show so the set was short and sweet.  The Purple # 7 struck me right on the head with their minimalist, garagey, take on Marquee Moon era Television psych pop.  Let the Purple reign begin!  Check some mp3s from the show below.  AB1 (09/05/2008)
